I've tried it before. I didn't really like it too much. It was a bitch shooting my spear with it because I needed a 2nd person to hold the bow while I pulled back and steadied the spear. It goes alot farther using a bow than when I throw it but it kills the animal too fast. I like the process of chasing the animal down and thrusting the spear into it repeatedly, then waiting until it comes into the 3-5 foot range so I can deliver the killing throw.

The amount of bruising I got from the bow clapping back and hitting my arm is fucking retarded

I get the same problem handling a spear. I wear gloves now because I got tired of using hand sanitizer. There's also a very real danger of impaling yourself so I do my best to throw it away from me when I'm hunting.

If your aim is off even the slightest bit you could lose control of the spear and send it hurdling straight into your chest. Chest and stomach injuries aren't uncommon in spear hunting. That's why I make that extra effort to throw the spear 3-5 feet at the target. Anything more than that could result in self-harm because my accuracy would drop considerably, not to mention the fatigue of throwing it at that distance.

I was a volunteer spear hunting instructor from 2009-2014 and in that time I personally witnessed and contributed to 12 deaths. Some were accidental self-inflicted spear fatalities, others resulted from failure to maintain the proper distance from my range of throw. You show these guys instructional videos and stress the importance of safety but there's always someone who ignores the warnings and I end up looking like the bad guy just because some idiot got impaled with a spear.
