the theory of cause and effect is flawed,
we expect the outcome to mirror the struggle, that's wrong.

I heard her say from across the street, lanterns burning around my feet,
the anger building underneath my pumpkin mask and ruffled sleeves.
Should I give her troubled dreams? Or hang her cat from the tree?
Hide thumbtacks among the leaves or vampire bats above her screen?
Infectious rats in her sheets or beartraps on all her seats?
Fill her cereal with cremated ash...
    - mosquito wings
    - broken glass
    - amazon leech?!

"Go put on the tape, I'll be in soon."

Not if I hang you by a noose, replace your eyeballs with rusty screws,
put a cone snail in both your shoes or cyanide in your protein juice...
A jagged knife for each tooth, I'll slice and bite your bone like fruit,
listen as you try to move without your spine, tonight's muse.
Remove your teeth by the root, shatter your knees like a brute,
play your windpipe like a flute, decorate the yard with each piece of you.
I take my lollipop and bite off a bit, razor-sharp and poisonous,
make my way pass the kids dressed like Dracula or an ugly witch.
To the backyard, but where to hide? Beneath the stairs or somewhere high?
In the basket and with some time, she'll reach in to find a big surprise!

"Kidnap the Sandy Claws... hm hm hm hm hm,
throw away the key and then... hm hm hm hm hm."

I can hear her take the décor down, my vengeance building with each sound,
the night's not over but this clown smashes the lanterns on concrete grounds.
Drawing closer at a steady pace, my thirst for blood becoming a heavy weight,
I anticipate how she'll taste, imagining something like a candy cane.
When she bothers me, I swing and cut through her carotid arteries,
wrap her in a plain white sheet that's soon stained by her offering.
Some children scream, run and laugh like it's just a twisted scene,
I fill her up with straw and weeds, a Scarecrow to watch over Halloween.
Cannot wait for her lover to see the improved version of his Queen,
respect tradition and you'll be free to trick r' treat and never bleed.

Across the street, I hear a smash, a chubby kid with a dirty bag,
taking pumpkins from the grass and chucking them like their trash.
My next victim he might be, or possibly the kids with their scheme,
to take a witch to the quarry and prank her for their selfish needs.
The werewolves who seek foolish prey with a hearty purpose,
or the tormented driver with secrets too dark to surface.
I walk amongst them, empowered by blood soaked hands,
the spirit of Devil's Night ... but you can call me Sam.

It's been ten years since their adventure began, seeking rescue,
creating a family out of orphans and reaching refuge.
A difficult journey, molting volcanoes and seething sharp tooths,
escaping with their lives as hard times draw by like harpoons.
A charismatic bunch with unconditional love, animated like cartoons,
seldomly argue, avoided becoming ice cubes or drowning in monsoons.
They've lost plenty though, parents martyred for miracles,
a heartbreaking origin when the hero watched his hero go.

    They've survived.

Protecting each other from what may come, weather or worse,
predators endured, overcoming odds beyond a measure of words.
Forever assured, as long as they're together they're never alone,
better than cold, roaming the Earth without the pressure of snow.
Day and night, they forget what it's like to be afraid to die,
to race the light through a tunnel or to forget the taste of life.
Now. They sway through waves of water hoping to chase the stars,
just as they fade their scars, something threatens to replace the marks.
It could be days apart, but in their aching hearts, they sense the end,
enjoying what they have left, quenching thirsts with their friends.

    They've lived life.

Little Foot, Spike, Petrie, Ducky and Chomper,
feasting on tree stars and drinking glacier water.
Loving each other and the company they trade,
as the meteors fall ... catastrophe invades.
Embracing the conclusion of their fairy tale,
eternal bliss for a split second of a scary Hell.
In a land before time, the hourglass depletes,
and the dinosaurs we love are at last extinct.

Billy halfway devoured in boxes, trying desperately to discover the biggest,
knowing deep down that Santa arrived and listened to the urgency in his wish list.
A baseball glove, a slay, a BB gun and some games, he's having fun and behaved,
she's brushing doll hair, surrounded by ponies and porcelain stares, laughing in waves.
My wife's slaving away in the kitchen, vegetables and chicken, sprinkles on the cake,
humming Christmas songs along with the oven fan, I'm a lucky man, some would say.
I inhale my pipe while clearing my brain, watching the time digging it's grave,
when I was younger, it was rage, but now it's something between depression and shame.
That's besides the point though, today is about my family and the love on their face,
and hoping it's enough to keep me sane while fighting off the voices I struggle to restrain.
"Daddy! Look at my aim!" Billy shoots the cardboard target I had made the night before,
Sally sits on my leg while showing me the doll I could barely afford...
I try to adore her but deep inside, I'm thinking about the bills collecting outside the door,
eviction notices and hopelessness I hide from them so they can enjoy youth some more.
I wish I could be nine again, ignorant to the lies of man, safe from the financial storms,
to see the good in everyone, when neighborhoods were such fun, protected from racial norms.
When relationships were simple, love was a temple, not a single chip in the bricks,
now my marriage teeters and totters in this theater of wrong turns... it's a twisted abyss.
A constant battle between wanting to kill someone and wanting to leap from a cliff,
waking up every morning mourning while rain is pouring on my dreams and wrists.
"Daddy, why are you so sad?" Sally asks while hugging tightly onto my ribs,
"I'm okay, baby, someday when you're older I'll explain and it'll all make sense."

"I love you, daddy..." "I love ya too..."

I drag myself up the stairs, finally alone, I sneak into the bathroom,
grab the straight razor and begin cleaning up my beard, it's pass due.
And yet it's clear, what I have to do to escape this mental vacuum,
as I draw the blade across my throat, and slip into a black tomb.

Last Christmas. I'll give you my heart... and the very next day, everything will change.
