    Recording on my computer.

Ok, so I use acoustica Mixcraft.

    Explain something to me.

I want to record high quality vocals over beats that i already have on my computer. I want to purchase a high quality mic, and a mixer, and whatever else is necessary.

I know the mic would hook to the mixer, but do all mixers hook to computers? What kind of cables/connections would I need? any extra components? or any other programs for my computer? Also, what kind of suggestions would any of you make for something like that? I just want to record pure audio straight to my computer at a high quality through a mixer. Someone please explain this to me.

what's the difference between a preamp and a mixer?

and will it create higher quality for recording into a low-class program such as Mixcraft?

A mixer does just what it says it does, it allows you to mix your volume levels. You throw all of your inputs into the mixer and then you move the slider bars up and down to 'mix' your volume levels.

A preamp is just what it says...a preamplifier. It boosts your mic signal before it goes into your recording program. Many preamps use tubes and other electronics to warm your sound.

Phantom power is a power source that powers your microphone (if you have a condensor mic that needs to be powered on.) Most preamps and mixers have a phantom power source.

You can do your mixing in most software recording programs so I wouldn't worry about buying a mixer.

You'll want a preamp and a condensor microphone. You may also want to upgrade your computer soundcard.

Only buy a mixer if you need alot of inputs for recording bands and shit liek that. If you just need an imput for a mic, you're better off getting a high quality preamp as opposed to a low quality mixer that would cost the same, namean?

you need to drop a budget so we can explain what 'high quality' components to get. High quality is such a losoe term, we could suggest a Rode K2 which is $700 or a Nuemann TLM149 which is $4500...so drop an overall budget and we can help more.

All right. I want a great mic, and apparently a great preamp, but they don't have to be the best. I just want studio, or near studio quality in my vocal recordings from anywhere around 500-800 dollars.

    condensor - studio mic...

dynamic - stage... or vocal mic (usually for vocalists... ie: singers...)

You'll be better off with a condensor... but with that you'll need a preamp... as well as a semi decent soundcard...

DO NOT BUY MIXER + MIC!!!!
    WASTE OF CASH!!!!

Search on Google - Samson CO1U USB Mic
No pre amps or mixers needed and it's a condenser. Costs around £50 = $80

    Peace
